Hurricanes: The Politics of Disaster Response in Cuba, Haiti and the US
Hurricanes: The Politics of Disaster Response in Cuba, Haiti and the
United States
Tuesday, September 23, 6:00 -8:00 pm, Metro State University, St. Paul
Two years ago, the images of devastation in the wake of hurricane
Katrina, particularly in New Orleans' Ninth Ward, raised questions
about the U.S. government's preparedness to respond to disasters in
low-income communities of color. In light of more recent hurricane
activity in the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico, the panelists at
this teach-in will discuss how differences in hurricane preparedness
and relief efforts in Cuba, Haiti and the United States highlight
underlying issues of race, class and policy.
Speakers: August Nimtz (Professor, Political Science, University of
Minnesota), Kelvin Monroe (Assistant Professor, Ethnic Studies,
Metropolitan State University) and Ruben Joanem, (Community Organizer,
Haiti Justice Committee).
Location: Metropolitan State University, Saint Paul Campus
Library, Room 302, 645 East Seventh Street, Saint Paul, MN 55106-5000
(for directions visit:
http://www.metrostate.edu/library/location.html#stpaul).
Refreshments will be provided.
The event will be followed the same night by a benefit for Cuban
hurricane relief at First Avenue/7th St. Entry nightclub in
Minneapolis. More information at the Minnesota Cuba Committee website
