APRIL 17-19, 25,26;film "HUNGER": IRA's Bobby Sands

04/17/2009 07:30

Walker Art Center is screening the film "Hunger" about Irish Republican Army protest movement leader,Bobby Sands, who undertook a hunger strike to his death to protest British rule of Ireland in 1981.
As it relates to Free Speech, the film shows how when he only have your body left to use in a protest, Bobby Sands did what he says in the film "Taking my life is not just the only thing I can do, it is the right thing." He was elected to the British Parliament while in the first month of the hunger strike.  His image and count down of days was on television every night. He lasted 66 days and effected change in the treatment of prisoners after that.  With contemporary connections to Abu Graib and Guantanamo prisons, this film, while about a historical event nearly 30 years ago, still resounds with relevancy today.
