Jews, Palestinians, and Allies for Peace in Gaza Protest in St. Louis Park
Sunday afternoon, a spirited crowd of demonstrators led by Jewish and Palestinian-American voices lined the only street leading to the Sabes Jewish Community Center in the Minneapolis suburb of St. Louis Park. Following a 2:30 press conference, the crowd swelled to some 200 people demanding an end to Israel's war in Gaza and urging U.S. media and pro-Zionist organizations to take note of the movement of Jews standing in solidarity with Palestine. Inside the building, a pro-Israel event was taking place.
Organizers announced that the next rally in support of Gaza will take place at Loring Park in downtown Minneapolis at 2pm on Saturday, January 17.
Among the speakers at the press conference was Lisa Albrecht, organizer with the International Jewish Anti-Zionist Network--Twin Cities, "There is not one monolithic Jewish community or voice in the world, the U.S., or Minnesota," she began. "Today, we - as Jews of conscience - affirm the need for Jewish resistance to Zionism and stand committed to situating our work in a long legacy of Jewish people throughout history who have stood in solidarity with others in common struggles against all forms of racism and repression. There are many Jews who are not Zionists and do not support Israeli government policy. We stand with the Palestine solidarity movement, and call upon all Jews of conscience to demand an end to the Israeli war on Gaza."
Now entering its 17th day, this most recent massacre has resulted in over 900 Palestinian deaths in Gaza. Since 2000, at least 4,876 Palestinian lives and 1,062 Israelis have been claimed in the conflict, including over 1,000 Palestinian children and 100 Israeli children, according to IfAmericansKnew.org. The most recent round of Israeli strikes has targeted several mosques and pharmacies, a mental health clinic, the Ministry of Eduction, and a UN School, among other civilian targets.
"They've been under siege for over two years--no food, medicine, supplies, nothing getting in," said Ziad Amra of the Minnesota Coalition for Gaza. "And the reason is, Israel and the United States want to overturn the results of a free election. Every nation on this earth has a right to self determination, and that includes the Palestinian people. Every nation on this earth has a right to self defense, and that includes the Palestinian people." Hamas, claimed to be a terrorist organization by the European Union, the U.S. and Israel, won the last Palestinian parliamentary elections in January 2006.
Ilana Lerman spoke for Jews for an End to the Occupation, delcaring, "We as Jews of conscience will not stand by and let Israel do this in our name." She invoked the story of Simeon, Levi, and their father Jacob. In the Hebrew Bible, Simeon and Levi massacre the city of the rapist of their sister Dinah. Jacob responds with disapproval and fears for his life, for the act will likely lead to retailiation. "There is a part of me that is like Jacob," continued Lerman, "scared of what Israel's actions will generate for Jews living across this world. Israel is now making me feel unsafe living in my own home. Our brothers and sisters here standing behind Israel's horrific actions," referring to the rally happening inside, "will never create safety for our Jewish communities. Today I feel blessed to be surrounded by Jews and allies who are outraged and taking resopnsibility for the transformation of this violence into a just peace for the human beings in Gaza and Israel. May all humans be safe."
Fewer than five pro-Israel demonstrators showed up towards the end of the rally, including one with an Israeli flag. When they were confronted and a Palestinian flag held up in front, one St. Louis Park police officer aimed a can of chemical irritant at the crowd, but the situation was defused and there was no violence. The protest was entirely non-violent and police generally showed restraint, not including erecting barricades for the crowd to exercise their free speech behind and attempting to order away demonstrators trying to confront pro-Israel passersby.
The Zionist rally took place inside the Sabes community center, which refused to allow those with dissenting opinions to enter their property. Many prominent politicians were expected to attend; former U.S. Senators Norm Coleman and Mark Dayton were seen leaving in their cars. The event was missing from the Sabes public events calendar, but promoted by United Jewish Communities, a Minnesota coalition that notably ignores the myriad Jewish voices for peace. Their website lists AIPAC as one of the sponsors of Sunday's event.
With Cedar Lake Road lined by Jews and allies chanting for over two hours holding signs and Palestinian flags, attendees were not permitted to ignore such voices on Sunday. Concluded Albrecht: "Do not let mainstream Jews and their organizations call you "Jew-haters." Have courage and speak out. Do not be silent about Gaza."

I was there.
Found this quote from your write-up interesting, "(the JCC), which refused to allow those with dissenting opinions to enter their property."
Actually, that's not factual. there were no mind readers at the entrance who validated mental solidarity. There were officials who were there to keep peace, and make sure no one with mega phones and bad intentions entered the property...which they did. It was a quiet Jewish rally in a center for Jewishness. Not on the streets marching around inviting instigators.
Also, didn't read much about the "kill all the Jews" chanting, or the fact that these folks said more about a complete wipeout of the Jewish state, than merely Gaza.
There are radicals in our midst.
That's what I took away.
good reporting though.

oh yea, one more thing
there were indeed only 5 or so pro-Israel supporters who dared to engage the relatively aggressive Palestinian "human rights" protesters, but there were 1000 who peacefully went into the building and left quietly.
considering the vibe of the palestinians without ANY instigation of the zionists (besides living and breathing), it's a blessing nothing happened.
I find your characterization
I find your characterization to be grossly inaccurate and offensive. Factually, I dispute that the event inside could have held 1000 people. Evidence would convince me otherwise, but from what I saw there just weren't nearly enough cars. Also, I'd like to see if you have any recording of anyone chanting "kill all the Jews" - actually, I'm quite certain you don't. I think the fact that this was a Jewish organized protest (did you miss that point somehow?) makes that unlikely. I was there - among those who understand real solidarity, not among those whose voices are already heard everyday, unlike you apparently were - from the very beginning to very end recording, and never heard such a thing. On the other hand, I do have recordings of people saying, "Don't blame Israel, blame the Zionists - there are Jews against the occupation too." 10,000 rallied against the war in Tel Aviv last week!
I also find your account deeply racist. What exactly do you mean by "vibe of the Palestinians"? What do you mean by "inviting instigators?" I have tape of a police officer telling a Zionist who stormed through, demanding the protesters leave, that "this is what freedom looks like - in America they have the right to be here." Who is inviting conflict when those in power massacre those without, or when those in power gather with vast resources that those without don't have? You seem to be implying that those who had "bad intentions" - apparently meaning those who spoke up against Zionist policy - were all Palestinians, and that this would somehow render their complaints irrelevant. Remember again - this was a Jewish organized rally; those who confronted the counter-demonstrators were Jewish, Palestinian, Euro-American, and others, together, and again, I have tape of this.
Simply not true
I was also there and would like to tell you that your comment about the "1000 who peacefully went into the building and left quietly" is simply not true. I saw a woman (evidently she went with the inside crowd) drive by those of us who lined the roads with her middle finger up. Is flicking off around 200 people peaceful or quiet? I also heard a man who came out of JCC call a protester a fool to her face. Again, is that peaceful? Finally, I heard around 2-3 people from the inside crowd also say "fuck you" to those of us protesting.
It would be nice if the issues were simple, which is the picture you are trying to paint, so that one side was right and the other side was wrong. Perhaps the fact that expletives were said by both groups at this event (which is a fact) to "the other" is actually a very good illustration of how the issues involved in the recent events in Gaza as well as the Israeli-Palestinian conflict are far more complex than the "good guys"/"bad guys" story you're trying to write. Dig deeper.
You're quite sensitive
for people who support neo-Nazi Islamists like Hamas. Their end game is to exterminate the Jews, and you're offended by expletives.
Palestinian propaganda - it's getting tedious
There WAS a threatening, nasty vibe from the counter protesters. This is not racist, this is the way it was. I was menacingly stared down and I felt very threatened. A number of these protesters were, indeed, instigators.
Palestinians have always had a problem with separating truth from fiction. Whether it's through the lie strewn electronic intifada or by a handful of counter protesters at the JCC on Sunday.
Boycott, Divestment and Sanction Israel
stop the ethnic cleansing of the people of Palestine... it has been going on since 1948.
Simple Solutions
It's about the rockets. Stop firing them and Israel will leave Gaza.
Stop using your women and childen as shields and they won't die.
Recognize Israel and there will be peace.
"Stop resisting in any way
"Stop resisting in any way and accept your miserable fates," good strategy and the one imperialists generally hope for.
Stop resisting in any way,
be subdued, and pay jizya out of your own hands.
Right, Anon?
I was there too.
The person who says they were stopped from engaging pro Israel people entering the rally...these were families with children mostly from what I saw. Maybe had your protesters not parked in the JCC parking lot they could have parked in the lot as opposed to having to park and walk by the tirades going on.
There is no doubt there were many people inside- 1000? I'm not sure, but close. However, there weren't anything near he 250 protesters outside that the strib reported.
