Summer Series Event August 2nd at Arise Bookstore (2441 Lyndale Avenue South Minneapolis)
Nau mai, Haere mai...
8 PM: Come join us for a discussion and presentation about state repression on indigenous activists and others in New Zealand and beyond (including short presentations by the RNC 8 and EWOK!).
The State 'Terror Raids' of October 15, 2007:
On Monday, October 15th 2007, more than 300 police raided over 60 house across Aotearoa/New Zealand. They arrested 17 people (including the prominent Maori activist Tame iti) at gunpoint and ransacked their homes. Armed police also blockaded the entire Ruatoki Valley, home to several thousand Tuhoe Maori, and interrogated anyone entering or exiting the area. Sixteen of the arrestees were detained in prisons across the country facing minor charges for unlawful possession of firearms or unlawful weapons. Ordinarily, if the police were concerned about breaches of the Arms Act invlving simple possession, they could issue a warning to the people invovled. Instead, police threatened to lay terrorism charges on these indigenous activists with penalties of up to 14 years inprisonment.
Come to find out more about Indigenous organizing in New Zealand, the history of Maori and Tuhoe resistance, the legal case of the October 15th crew, and how you can help here in Minnesota.
9PM: Ice cream and Music by: AC, Burger Thirst, Zombie Season, Witch Beat and Eric Bates
