Thousands Rally Against Unjust SB1070 and Demand Equal Rights for Immigrants

Thousands gather and march to Convention Center in support of Comprehensive Immigration Reform and in protest against GOP-endorsed gubernatorial candidate Tom Emmer for supporting Arizona’s unjust law SB 1070 that attacks all immigrant workers and their families.

MINNEAPOLIS, May 1st – Over 6,000 march to Convention Center to protest against any politicians who supports the passing of Arizona’s unilateral law SB1070, which allows local police to demand “papers” from anyone that looks like an “undocumented immigrant” and to send a clear message that Legalization for All is imperative and Minnesotan families will not be torn apart by racist laws such as the SB 1070.

“SB 1070 is a human rights catastrophe. The SB1070 makes racism the law.; Immigrants and all people of conscience in Minnesota will not stand for any gubernatorial candidates in MN that support it,” Said community leader Josefina Franco. “Thousands of people in Arizona have been protesting non-stop since the bill passed. Even police officers in Arizona say the SB 1070 is impossible to be properly enforced.”

The march comes as a joint effort to press Congress and President Obama to support full legalization, an end to raids and deportations, and legislation based on equal rights for all this year. The march will also show strong and united opposition to any possibilities of anti-immigrant and racist laws passing in MN such as the SB1070. Last month many thousands gathered at the National Mall to express the urgency of a reform of our unjust immigration law system, the same place where President Obama publicly committed to work on a plan for reform by the end of the year.

“The debate around immigration reform needs to stop focusing on enforcement and instead focus on acceptance, inclusion and equal rights for all who live and work in this country.” Said Gerania Mata from Workers Interfaith Network
