Moderation and Coming Together
With a new shift in power from the left to right we could actually be in a good position over the next two years. The growing hump charting a movement in popularity from the party currently dominating the political landscape to the one currently in the minority position will among other things bring some checks and balances to the game we currently don’t have. This could very well be a more balanced and lively two years and with hope it could actually be the kind of change we haven’t seen yet. The script will be all new and could pack an awakening punch to the status quo.
In order for that to be the case we will need to have elected representatives willing to work across the isle. We will need people earnestly interested in crafting legislation that will be the stuff all Americans are interested in seeing passed. It will need to be directed at meaningful change, not just stuff for one side.
We have had roughly two years of strife, anger and bitterly divided politics. The campaigns have been down, dirty and even more desperate than those of the previous two elections. Neither side was confident they had a lock this time, as, if they did so much money being poured into the dirty stuff would have been unnecessary.
But, with the only thing to see now is whether the House will be accompanied in a changing of the guard by the Senate, we know people will be forced to work together to have legislation passed. It would only be good for the country to see more change through working together towards common goals. It would be bad if what we see is further bitter partisan bickering, both for the country, and really for those who just gained new power.
We have a horrible state of unemployment, and I know that is a driving force in potentially turning many traditionally blue states red. People are just upset with the way the economy is moving, and that is certainly true in my state with folks looking around and repeating the old Janet Jackson refrain “what have you done for me lately?” Well, whether it’s too soon to call both chambers effectively switched or not is really a non-issue at this point.
Based on the predictions of almost every news outlet the House will not only switch, but will at the very least go back to the numbers they had before Democrats were handed the reigns to hold the majority by the people. Thus, even if only one goes, there will still need to be cooperation to see goals met, otherwise those goals are as good as dead in the water, or will move as slowly as molasses. To have a robust period of valuable legislation and a coming together after such a sustained period of tasteless divide would do wonders for our nation. This, as the executive office is still held by a Democrat.
Our children are graduating with lower and lower levels of education. We have slipped from the top spots in mathematics and science proficiency to well below the top ten. This cannot be addressed by being so far apart we do not discuss such issues with each other. In fact if being better educated helps us to function more highly as adults in the world, perhaps the bitter divide in politics currently is a direct reflection of our downward slide from our former position of being considered one of the world’s more enlightened nations.
We can only address this and all the other important things if we come together. We can only address these things if we stop the dirty politics and lies. We can only stop this if we put it down here, say good bye to it and walk away from it towards a more balanced future regardless of the party in power or party affiliation.
