Austerity - 1%'s Global Battle Cry

Whether we are left with the Fiscal Cliff or a Grand Bargain, workers in the U.S. face massive cuts to programs such as Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, unemployment insurance, Food Stamp assistance and other needed social safety nets. This is an example of “austerity” which has largely been pursued in the U.S. until now, on a statewide and local level.

The Minneapolis City Council is now considering inclusion of the MN ASAP resolution for an upcoming agenda. The MN ASAP resolution calls for a shift in federal spending priorities from war to meeting essential needs in our communities. This resolution has been individually endorsed by Minneapolis Council Members: Cam Gordon, Gary Schiff, Kevin Reich, John Quincy, Elizabeth Glidden, and Robert Lilligren. In response to an investigation by local news outlet KSTP, the Welfare Rights Committee staged a protest to demand an end to what the group calls “poor bashing.” The Committee went on to say that reports such as these are inaccurate and shame people away from accepting much needed help, that this nation is in a state of economic crisis and 1 in 7 people are on food stamps.
