Everything for everyone, nothing for just ourselves: Zapatista Coffee in Minnesota

"Chiapas...bleeds coffee," wrote Subcommandante Marcos in 1992, before the Zapatista uprising. The far southern state of Chiapas is one of the poorest in Mexico, a state where the indigenous Maya peoples have repeatedly rebelled against  government policies that deny them land, deny the use of indigenous languages in education and government, and help wealthy absentee landowners extract the many resources of the state--petroleum, gas, hydroelectric power, cattle, food crops--and coffee.  One third of the coffee produced in Mexico is grown in Chiapas.

The G20 in London: Globalization of Protest, Policing

The April 2009 G20 in London was the scene of the first large-scale event—expected to be faced by considerable protest—since last fall's 2008 RNC, held in St. Paul, Minnesota.  Looking at the eerie parallels between both events, one sees a pattern of globalization—not only of protest—but of preemptive police tactics and handling of protesters.

Indymedia London has been providing live coverage of the protests and policing.  One man, Ian Tomlinson, 47, died Wednesday after collapsing during the protests.  Witnesses have come forward indicating that police impeded efforts of medical assistance, contradicting early corporate media reports that protesters hurled bottles at police trying to help.

The Foreclosure Crisis in Minnesota

by Lynette Malles, Poor Peoples' Economic Human Rights Campaign Member

In April, 2008, Minnesota saw 1,405 foreclosures , which was a 68 percent-rise over the same period in 2007, according to a RealtyTrac study. In the first quarter of 2008, Minnesota was hit with 4,231 foreclosures. By August in Minneapolis alone, 950 homes were abandoned, according to Minnesota Public Radio. Such homes were evacuated, locked, and the heat kept on to prevent pipes from freezing.
