As a strike wave sweeps the country, the Maoist leadership agrees to banning strikes.

Since the Maoists emerged in the April 2008 Nepal elections as the largest party (though without an absolute majority) to lead the new coalition government, they have failed to heal existing divisions - in their own party, within the parliamentary political system and its ruling class - or within the intermingled social, caste and ethnic tensions across the wider society. In fact, all these divides have widened. And since November a strike wave has spread across the country.

On December 12, 2008, the Teamsters for a Democratic Union (TDU), a reform caucus in the Teamsters Union, sent out the following message announcing the death of Ron Carey.
Ron Carey the message stated, "was the first Democratically Elected Teamster President Remembered As A Corruption Fighter And Vindicated Reformer.

"Ron Carey, a former UPS driver and Teamster president who set the standard for American union leaders for courage and honesty and transformed the leadership of both the Teamsters Union and the AFL-CIO, died yesterday at age 72 at New York City Queens Hospital.

the Chicago IWW is hosting the 2008 Midwest Wobfest, Nov.8-9 at the UE hall on 37 S. Ashland Avenue. All IWWs and other workers are invited. Presentations require a $10 registration fee. It is in the darkness of the early morning hours that hundreds of Palestinian day laborers leave their homes, gather in the streets and then head to their work in the fields and plantations of the region. More than two-thirds of the camp's labor force work at least part-time in agriculture.
