During May of 1978, Stewart Alexander was making plans to end his employment with Safeway Stores in Southern California to open his construction business as a license general contractor. After working for Safeway Stores for six years, Alexander was earning close to $1,600 a month plus overtime working as a journeyman clerk.

Video Interview: IWW Denied Access to Mall of America by Riot Police

As an act of solidarity, several dozen local Industrial Workers of the World members and supporters, along with National Lawyer's Guild observers, intended to peacefully escort the fired then reinstated Erik Forman to the Mall of America. In line with recent police aggression in the Twin Cities related to the 2008 RNC in St. Paul (see http://www.indybay.org/newsitems/2008/08/30/18531223.php), police massed at the IWW rally point at the light rail station at Lake & Hiawatha.

Working Democracy for Minnesota

Working democracy is the economic self-government of the workers. By definition it involves the workers in the management decision-making process as part of the daily activity of the workplace.

Working democracy cannot, therefore, be imposed on society by any political party or minority faction of the workers. It cannot be given to the workers by any benevolent dictator, or granted to them by any philanthropic elite. It can only come into existence by the creative, coordinated action of the workers themselves.

Who are the “workers”?

Economic Self-Government of, by and for Working People

In a working democracy, workers will elect their supervisors and managers -- their fellow workers whom they recognize as the most experienced and capable in the work that they do. Management authority will flow from the bottom up instead of from the top down.
