Indymedia Roundup - Week of February 14, 2011

Rally Against Hate in Hastings -- Hastings High School students put on three showings last weekend of The Laramie Project, a popular play about about the homophobic murder of gay student Matthew Shephard in Laramie, Wyoming.  That drew the attention of the notorious Fred Phelps and his Westboro Baptist Church, a group which sees homosexuality as the root cause of the world's evils and regularly protests Laramie as well as the funerals of soldiers killed in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Lately, however, their protests more often turn into no-shows - and that's what happened in Hastings thanks to a quickly-organized local response.  Not only did the play sell out in conservative Hastings; hundreds of supporters lined the sidewalks in a demonstration outside of Hastings High.  See more photos from the demonstration and a report via TCIMC here, or read more via Bluestem Prairie.

Warning National ID Card comming

Shortly, all 50 States, under the directive of the Obama Administration’s Department of Homeland Security, will be required to federalize their driver’s licenses, effectively converting what was a uniquely, “local,”  state drivers’ license into what amounts to a “National ID Card”---or, as some opponents to the concept during the Clinton years called it, “a United States Internal Passport.”

Transmisogyny, cis people, violence and the murder of Krissy Bates

Upcoming: Vigil organized by Outfront Minnesota on Friday, January 21 | On facebook

Krissy Bates was found murdered in her apartment last week, in all likelihood by someone she knew and feared.  She’d appealed to her landlord to fix a broken window so that she’d be safer, but the landlord told her that she’d have to pay for the repair herself.

The media coverage, where it exists, has been sordid--from stories that mis-gender her to the City Pages’ ghoulish blotter coverage of her sex work and her last voicemail.   Once again, the death of a unique, valuable person can be turned into a media spectacle because that person is a trans woman.

I’m not trans.  I’m not trans, so if I say stupid things, please correct me.  I’m not trans, and I’m addressing this to cis-gendered people, those of us for whom our gender assigned at birth, our bodies and our personal identity match up.

There are trans women in my life for whom I care deeply.  I want to live with them in safety among people who respect and love them.  This story--and the many others like it every year--makes me very angry.

Open community letter demands resignation of District 202 director Curt Prins over youth disempowerment, unaccountability

"District 202 was originally intended to be a community organization “by and for youth”, providing physical space for queer youth to exercise their agency, build community, and grow as leaders. The elimination of the Youth Advisory Committee in 2009 and the absence of a youth presence on the Board demonstrate a disregard for input from youth. More specifically, the changes since your appointment have especially affected queer youth facing multiple oppressions. The Board is incomplete and ineffective without the voices of people of color, trans people, dis/abled people, poor people, and youth. The new structure of District 202 is inherently classist: by forcing queer youth to access District 202 via internet only, you have made the organization’s limited services utterly inaccessible to poor queer youth." (Read on for the full letter written by members and allies of the TC queer community.)

Skeletons in Target's political closet: immigrant and LBGTQ advocates come out against corporate hypocrisy

Yesterday, about 75 immigrant rights and LGBTQ advocates demonstrated in front of Target, over their connection to Republican candidate for governor Tom Emmer. They condemned Target’s $150,000 contribution to MNForward, which used the money for a television ad urging the election of Emmer who is infamous for his anti-immigrant, anti-gay, and anti-minimum wage views.

The protesters carried 4 four-foot-tall dia de los muertos skeletons, signifying Emmer's offensive positions on immigrants, GLBTQ people, and low income workers, as well as Target's corporate political contributions.
