Video: RNC 8 Case Concludes

Today, October 25, was supposed to be the beginning of the trial of the RNC 8.  Originally facing terrorism charges under the first (and so far only) known use of the Minnesota PATRIOT Act, the eight anti-RNC organizers then faced four charges each before pressure on county attorney Susan Gaertner sent the terror enhancements packing.  In the end, Gaertner dropped charges against three of the eight completely, and in doing so found it easier to secure a final plea agreement on a lesser charge.

At the final hearing last Tuesday, supporters packed every seat available to them.  Afterwards--shown in this eight minute TCIMC/Chicago IMC video--the RNC 8 Defense Committee spoke to the media and supporters to wrap up the case, look back on the last two years, remember the reasons for resisting the 2008 RNC, and send a message to the Democratic National Committee, which is considering Minneapolis as the site of its 2012 spectacle.

More than two years after the 2008 Republican National Convention, it appears that the last legal and political defense work is finally reaching a conclusion. Two years of standing together, not always in agreement, but bound by our outrage against a state which systematically destroys our supposed rights. Two years of coming to understand that we are not exceptional and that these rights do not actually exist for anyone except the richest of the rich. Two years of standing and fighting together anyway, retaining our dignity and our strength in our own separate ways.

Earlier today (October 19, 2010), Max Specktor and Rob Czernik pled guilty to gross misdemeanor Conspiracy to Riot, and Garrett Fitzgerald and Nathanael Secor pled guilty to gross misdemeanor Conspiracy to Damage Property. These are all non-cooperating plea agreements; they will not be called upon to testify against anyone else. All of them received 100 hours of community service to be served over 10 months, no jail time or restitution, and a $200 fine.  Max and Nathanael were sentenced to one year supervised probation; Garrett and Rob, two years.  We recognize that the plea deal may come as a surprising development to supporters, especially considering that the prosecution originally branded the RNC 8 “terrorists” and was still committed to securing felony convictions for certain defendants only two weeks ago.

Dear supporters near and far,

Important Update on the RNC8 Case - New Hearing Tuesday, 10/19 at 9am

Dear supporters near and far,

It is with strong and mixed emotions that we bring important news: there appears to be a major change in the cases of the four remaining RNC 8 defendants–Garrett, Max, Nathanael and Rob. The four have tentatively reached a plea agreement with prosecutors, likely avoiding trial. The agreement, if it goes according to plan, significantly reduces the charge, calls for favorable sentencing, and is non-cooperating.

Computers and Memory Sticks Needed for RNC 8 Trial

The remaining RNC 8 are gearing up for court and there are a few things that would help us and the Defense Committee prepare a little easier. As our volunteer base grows to incorporate more volunteer legal workers and independent media, we need to accommodate them with ways to help prepare for trial. We're currently seeking donations of:

* 2 or more laptop computers to be used for legal defense. The computers we're looking for don't need to be fancy, but should be able to play cds/dvds, have
