RNC 8 Defense Public Meeting

07/12/2009 15:30

July 12, 3:30 to 5:30
Walker Church
3104 16th Ave S., Minneapolis

The one year anniversary of the pre-RNC house raids and the repressive police actions at the RNC is just weeks away. Trials for the RNC 8 could well begin sometime this fall. We have lots of important, meaningful work to do!

RNC Lawsuits!

The Civil Litigation crew of CRASS has been patiently working to create a legal support framework for our community to fight against the police abuses and terrorizing of dissent that we experienced during last year’s Republican National Convention. We are ready to assist lawyers in going on the offensive against the system that had us jailed, attacked, prosecuted, and gassed.

Dave Mahoney Pleads Guilty to Assault; State Drops Other Nine Felonies in Bargain

In a suprising turn of events to many, RNC activist Dave Mahoney pled guilty this morning to one count of second-degree assault.  30-40 supporters packed Judge Paulette Flynn's courtroom nearly to capacity, as Mahoney told the court he was guilty of the single assault charge in exchange for his other nine felonies being dropped.  Under the plea bargain, offered only a week ago after a months-long demonization campaign by the prosecutor that saw his charges increase from two to six to ten, Mahoney will likely serve a maximum of 56 days in jail and then be able to return to his native England.  His sentencing will be in the afternoon on July 9.

Copied below is a solidarity statement written and released by the Community RNC Arrestee Support Structure (CRASS).

RNC Activist Glenn Dyer Sentenced to 30 Days

Glenn Dyer of New York was sentenced by Judge Paulette Flynn in Ramsey County court today to 30 days in jail.  With three days credit and good behavior, he'll likely serve 17 days and be released on June 13.  Dyer pled guilty on March 27 (without a plea agreement) to first degree criminal damage to property, a felony stemming from the broken windows of Macy's on September 1st.

This American Life debuts story on Brandon Darby

Hello friends -

This week on Chicago Public Radio/Public Radio International's This American Life, they debuted a story on Brandon Darby, the infamous RNC snitch. It's the second story in the show; it focuses on Brandon going from Katrina "hero" to informant. TAL is pretty liberal, and has been good to the cause before, so it's disappointing how apologetic it is toward Brandon. It's also pretty horrible how they glaze over activist theories in a way that put them down (i.e. "diversity of tactics" at around 39 minutes).

The Sentencing of David McKay: Towards a More Empowering Militancy

On May 22nd, 2009, David Guy McKay was brought before Judge Michael J.
Davis and given 48 months behind bars -- double the sentence given to
Bradley Neal Crowder a week ago. Davis ruled that McKay had obstructed
justice and had not fully accepted responsibility for his actions.

During his sentencing, the judge pondered how this person, whose family
testified as being a good-natured and ambitious young man, could have come
to the Republican National Convention with a group of anarchists and
