Charges Against Three RNC 8 Defendants are Dropped!

From the RNC 8 Defense Committee: The RNC 8 received some surprising news Thursday afternoon - charges against Luce Guillen-Givins, Monica Bicking and Eryn Trimmer have been dropped!

The fact that charges have been dismissed against these three members of what Ramsey County has for two years labeled a “criminal enterprise” exposes the political motivations behind this case.  Although today’s news is an amazing development, charges against four of the eight defendants still remain and must continue to be fought with renewed strength.

RNC 8 Trial Date Set For October 25; Hearings in May

On Tuesday, the RNC 8 and a courtroom full of supporters sat through a hearing regarding several motions that had been filed in the previous months. While the proceedings were less than riveting, there were some surprising results. Even our old friend Bob Fletcher couldn’t resist showing up briefly to watch today’s hearing. Motion to Suppress Warrantless Search Denied for RNC 8's Max Specktor

After we learned earlier this month that the RNC 8 will face a single trial, we also learned that Judge Teresa Warner has denied Max Specktor’s motion to suppress evidence obtained in a warrantless search on September 1, 2008.  Max and his attorney Larry Leventhal had argued the motion in a September 29 hearing, a week before the October 8 hearing in which all eight argued for joinder at trial.

New Court Date for the RNC 8--Tuesday, February 2

The RNC 8 learned this week that Judge Teresa Warner has set the next court date for the eight: Tuesday, February 2 at 9am in room 131-B (that’s the big one) of Ramsey County Courthouse, 15 W. Kellogg Blvd., St. Paul.

(Not mentioned in the scheduling order is the little-known procedure for hearings on Groundhog Day: if the prosecutor sees her shadow when she wakes up in the morning, she’ll burrow back into bed and the trial will have to wait another six months.)*

RNC 8 To Stand Trial Together

ST. PAUL, Minnesota — Following their October 8, 2009 hearing before Judge Teresa R. Warner, the RNC 8 received word [Wednesday] that they will face a single joint trial, not the eight or three separate trials favored by the office of Ramsey County Attorney Susan Gaertner. The defendants were preemptively arrested before the Republican National Convention began last year, following many months of police infiltration and surveillance of their group, the RNC Welcoming Committee, which helped organize lodging, food, and medical and legal aid for those protesting the convention.
