Haymarket!
An Open Discussion About: The 1st MayDay, the Chicago Anarchists, and the 1886 Bombing that Shook a Nation.
May 4th 1886; Chicago, IL - In the midst of the historic, nation-wide struggle for the 8-hour workday, a General Strike has shut down most industries in the city. As tensions escalate, anarchists call a meeting in the Haymarket to protest the police killing of four strikers. As the police move in to break up the rally, a bomb explodes. The police respond with a hail of gunfire, killing several strikers and police. Who threw the bomb? Was it a furious worker or police provocateur? In a highly sensationalized trial with an admittedly biased judge, eight anarchist are convicted of conspiracy. One kills himself and four are hanged. It was the beginning of America's first red scare and changed the labor movement forever.
Join us to talk about what happened that night in the Haymarket and what it can teach us about the present moment.
